Professional Teeth Whitening for Awesome Results
White, bright teeth look youthful and attractive, but the foods and drinks we consume can tarnish tooth enamel. Commonly, our patients develop yellow, brown, or gray discoloration on their teeth, and they request help. Dr. Johnson offers professional teeth whitening in three distinct systems: in office whitening, custom-fitted take-home trays with prescription-strength bleach, and pre-loaded Go trays also with prescription-strength bleach. He will talk with you about your preferences and expectations, then suggest the most appropriate treatment option.

Why Teeth Stain
The enamel coating human teeth is the strongest substance the body creates, and it’s the second strongest naturally occurring substance on the planet. And while it is very durable, tooth enamel is also filled with tiny pores. Dark elements in food, called chromagens, can soak into the pores of our enamel, leaving behind nasty stains. Topical stains, such as those caused by foods, drinks, and tobacco, are called extrinsic stains, and they may be lightened or eliminated with teeth whitening trays.
Teeth can also stain from the inside. This type of discoloration is known as intrinsic staining, and it usually occurs from ingesting fluoride during childhood (bright white stains) or taking tetracycline antibiotics (brown or bluish stains). Intrinsic stains do not respond to chemical bleaching; Dr. Johnson can treat this type of tooth discoloration with bonding, porcelain veneers, or white dental crowns.
How Whitening Works
Opalescence Boost by Ultradent is a highly effective whitening system we provide onsite in our office. Treatment takes about one hour, and your results will be instant. Come in to see us, and leave with a vibrant, bright smile. In-office whitening is perfect for people who need fast action for an upcoming event, like a wedding, photographs, or a high school reunion.
Prescription Home Whitening System
Our potent, safe take-home teeth whitening system by Opalescence is prescription strength. You can only acquire it through a dentist. Over-the-counter whitening contains less active ingredient (peroxide), so professional whitening is more effective. When you visit us for teeth whitening, we will take an impression of your teeth to use as a guideline for fabricating custom-fitted bleaching trays. The trays will fit comfortably, yet snugly, onto your teeth so that saliva is kept from diluting the teeth whitening gel.
Your instructions for using the home whitening system will involve applying the gel we provide to the trays. Then, you’ll wear the trays for an hour or more each day, over the course of one to two weeks. Teeth lighten more with each use, so continue to use the trays for up to 14 days for optimal whitening. Retain your whitening trays. Do not throw them away! You can reuse the trays for retreatment, as needed. Dr. Johnson will advise you on how often you can safely bleach your teeth.
Much like the prescription take-home whitening system we use, Opalescence Go kits contain a gel that can only be procured through a dentist. The differences are, the trays with the Go kits are not custom-fitted; they’re disposable. Also, Go trays come with bleaching gel already in the trays. Simply take your kit home, pop it open, wear the trays as directed, and watch your teeth lighten over the course of treatment.

Extrinsic Stain Treatment
When chemical bleaching isn’t effective, Dr. Johnson may suggest cosmetic bonding, porcelain veneers, or dental crowns. These more permanent treatments completely cover stained tooth enamel, creating a new, vibrantly white surface that makes a smile look sensational!
